Ngoài mùa sinh sản, hải âu suốt ngày đêm ở ngoài khơi kể cả khi biển động và gió bão. Những đêm trăng, hải âu vẫn chao cánh bay lượn dệt biển. Cũng có lúc chúng nghỉ ngơi bằng cách đậu xuống nước, bồng bềnh trên biển. Chân hải âu màu nâu hồng, có màng như chân vịt giúp chúng bơi lặn dưới nước giỏi như khi bay trên trời. Tôm cá là thức ăn chính của hải âu. Cảnh hải âu bắt cá chuồn bay trông thật ngoạn mục. Các chuyên gia Nga công tác ở Vũng Tàu thường đứng trên tháp giàn khoan dầu tung bánh mì cho hải âu. Các chú Hải quân cho biết, ở quần đảo Trường Sa, những chiều nắng đẹp có hàng nghìn hải âu dệt biển, đứng trên các hạm tàu dõi theo cứ ngỡ là có muôn vàn chiếc thoi của các cô thợ dột trong điệu múa tung lên trời.

Trả hải âu về với biển rộng trời cao là nâng cánh tự do cho con chim hiền lành, tốt bụng…”.
Chú đã kể cho em nghe nhiều chuyện lạ về chim hải âu đối với bà con đánh cá khi gặp bão ngoài khơi. Chim hải âu có cặp mắt buồn ngơ ngác vì đó là hồn bơ vơ của những người xấu số bỏ mình trên biển cả bao đời nay. Truyện cổ Ả-rập kể rất cảm động chuyện hai anh em lạc nhau trên sa mạc, người anh đã nhập hồn vào hải âu bay đi tìm em khắp các vùng trời, vùng biển. Tiếng kêu của hải âu nghe buồn lắm: “Em ơi… em ơi”. Có lắng tai nghe mới rõ. Chú dặn em: “Đừng bắt và bắn hải âu nhé “.

Đây là loài chim biển cỡ lớn phân bố rộng khắp có bộ lông đen hoặc nâu ở trên lưng, màu trắng dưới bụng, chiều dài của chúng chỉ khoảng từ 30-50cm với sải cánh rất dài nên chúng rất ít khi vỗ cánh chỉ trao lượn lên xuống nhờ vào sức gió nên có thể bay ra ngoài biển khơi mà không tốn nhiều sức lực. Có lông viền đen bao quanh mắt,mỏ khá dài, khỏe và cong và mỏ của chúng có màu hồng nhạt riêng phần đầu mỏ có màu tối, là loài đẻ trứng.Thường bay theo đàn khả năng bay rất cao và đi được xa, chúng tập trung sinh hoạt thành bầy đàn ở khu vực đảo cao trên vùng biển lớn đã có người phát hiện tại Nha Trang khu vực đảo Yến hay huyện đảo Lý Sơn thuộc tỉnh Quảng Ngãi.
Nếu đi trên một con tàu ngoài biển, thỉnh thoảng mọi người vẫn thường bắt gặp những con chim hải âu bay theo. Đó là chúng bay theo dòng nước của con tàu đang rẽ sóng, ở nơi đó nhiều loại cá sẽ phải nổi lên và chúng rất tinh mắt tia cá rất giỏi. Những người đi biển xem cánh chim hải âu thể hiện để đoán thời tiết chúng chỉ đi kiếm ăn xa khi thời tiết tốt. Lúc thời tiết xấu, chim hải âu chỉ bay quanh quẩn ven bờ. Khi chúng kêu réo inh ỏi, bay hàng đàn trên đầu kiếm chỗ ẩn náu, là có thể bão giông sắp kéo đến.

Hải âu là loài chim báo bão, người bạn trung thành của những người đi biển. Hải âu nhìn rất đẹp. Nó không lớn lắm nhưng khoẻ khoắn và mạnh mẽ. Có khi hải âu mặc áo đen, có khi mặc áo xám nhưng đều có bộ lông trắng muốt ở phần bụng và ức. Cái đầu xinh xinh với đôi mắt tinh nhanh. Đôi chân ngắn, nhỏ. Đôi cánh sải như đua cùng gió cùng mây. Khi bay, chân hải âu duỗi thẳng, đuôi xoè ra, cánh dang rộng như vũ công balê đang biểu diễn trên bầu trời cao xanh tự do. Ngư dân yêu hải âu lắm, loài chim hiền lành và tốt bụng, có khi nó bay là là trên mặt nước như để vui đùa. Hải âu thật dễ thương.

– Không ai giết và ăn thịt chim hải âu bao giờ – Một bác sĩ Quân y đã nói thế.
Chim được cứu chữa, được săn sóc. Đến ngày thứ ba thì nó trở nên nhanh nhẹn. Nó vừa nhớ biển vừa lưu luyến con người.
Đến với biển là ta gặp hải âu. Hải âu là loài chim biển bơi lội giỏi, có thể bay trong bão tố. Nó có sải cánh dài, có con dài tới trên dưới 4 mét. Cánh dài nhưng hẹp và phẳng như tấm ván với bộ lông ken dày, vừa mềm
dẻo vừa bóng không ướt, không thấm nước. Hải âu có thể bay suốt ngày không vỗ cánh, không mệt mỏi; nhìn hải âu bay ta tưởng như một chiếc tàu lượn trên không.
Chiếc mỏ dài nâu đen có sọc trắng, ngoài cùng hơi cụp xuống, quắp lại. Mắt to, tròn đen, có viền một vòng lông trắng óng ánh. Lông hải âu phần lớn chỉ có hai màu: màu xám phía trên lưng, đuôi và cánh; phía dưới cổ, bụng, cánh và đuôi lại trắng mịn màng. Chăn lông ngỗng như chăn của Mị Châu đã quý, nhưng nếu có chăn lông bụng hải âu, em nghĩ, còn quý hơn nhiều. Mùa đông rét đắp thì ấm lắm.
Những dân chài lưới ở Vân Đồn cho hay: mùa xuân là mùa sinh sản của hải âu. Nó làm tổ ở vách đảo, đẻ trứng và nuôi con; mẹ con sống ở gần bờ một thời gian ngắn rồi bay ra biển xa. Tả chim Hải Âu – Mẫu 3
Hải âu là loài chim báo bão, người bạn trung thành của những người đi biển. Hải âu nhìn rất đẹp. Nó không lớn lắm nhưng khoẻ khoắn và mạnh mẽ. Có khi hải âu mặc áo đen, có khi mặc áo xám nhưng đều có bộ lông trắng muốt ở phần bụng và ức. Cái đầu xinh xinh với đôi mắt tinh nhanh. Đôi chân ngắn, nhỏ. Đôi cánh sải như đua cùng gió cùng mây. Khi bay, chân hải âu duỗi thẳng, đuôi xoè ra, cánh dang rộng như vũ công balê đang biểu diễn trên bầu trời cao xanh tự do. Ngư dân yêu hải âu lắm, loài chim hiền lành và tốt bụng, có khi nó bay là là trên mặt nước như để vui đùa. Hải âu thật dễ thương.
